Phuket Island is located in the south of Thailand and effectively called “the land of smiles”. The Island is on the west coast and lies in the Andaman Sea. The name ‘Phuket’ is said to have come from the Malayan word ‘Bukit’, which means quite literally ‘mountain’. Formerly, Phuket was only known for its rich tin, silk and rubber. Today, it is better known as a tourist paradise. The Island boasts fine white sandy beaches with crystal blue sea which is renowned as a base for major sea recreation.
